Running from an Angel marathon

January 9th 2010 Lake Mead, Nevada

By Eric Glass

Have you ever wondered what a race would be like if the race director’s sole purpose was NOT to make money? You might just get a long sleeve technical shirt that was not full of sponsors, or you might get an amazing finisher’s medal, or maybe you would even experience a fun race where you didn’t feel like a herd of cattle. If you choose the Angel Marathon you will get all three plus more.  Full  Story

MEMBER'S SPOTLIGHT

___________________________________________________________________
Welcome to the 2010 edition of the Member’s Spotlight. We have goals of updating this portion of the site monthly so we can get to know our fellow club members better and learn a few things we normally would not ask.

Up first are Dan and Mary Beaver-Knott.
We asked them a series of questions that we were interested in knowing. Dan and Mary both won the Athlete of the Year Award for 2009 and have been PTC members since December 2005. Starting their triathlon career in October 2005, they participate in the sport for a healthy outlet. Both have extreme type-A personalities. Yet because they can’t swim with the swimmers, bike with the cyclists, and run with the runners… they can definitely be competitive in triathlon! Dan and Mary have proven their abilities in our sport of triathlon. They are inspired by passion for the sport. Mary states, “Singers are passionate about their music, chefs are passionate about food, athletes are passionate about their sport. When you love something, it shows.”

Dan Knott-Beaver is the Manager of our sponsor store Run AZ and in his spare time enjoys history. He loves tomatoes, pizza, and the occasional Purina Dog Chow. Surprisingly this wasn’t the weirdest thing he has eaten. Dan has been known to chomp down a Grasshopper in his day and claims it is the weirdest food he has eaten. His favorite drink switches between Fat Tire and tequila. Dan has done extensive traveling in his triathlon adventures, all the way to the Ironman World Championships in Kona. His favorite race is the Desert Classic Duathlon in addition to the Deuces Wild. He trains the bike the most and is strongest in the run, weakest in the swim. During training days, he and Mary both love PowerGel Espresso flavored shots. After long training days, Dan loves to recover with sex. When it comes down to race day him and Mary both wake up as late as possible to avoid the nervous energy in transition, he ritualistically eats a bowl of oatmeal and a bagel. When we asked him what animal he would be and why, he indicated he would be an American Eagle because he would then be able to travel anywhere high or low, see everything, and he would soar above the rest! In 2010, we will more than likely see Dan enjoying life a little more, trying to drink more lemonade and a little less beer. He also wants to travel to the Grand Canyon.

Mary Beaver-Knott is a Veterinarian and loves pizza and sushi. In her spare time she cooks (preferably with a good beer or wine) and is very good at exploring new flavors. You’ll also catch her reading (preferably with a cup of coffee) or painting when the mood strikes. She is addicted to Starbucks nonfat lattes and she once ate a green ant in Australia while studying abroad. “Green ants tastes like citrus”, she states. The farthest Mary has traveled for a race was the NYC Marathon from Arizona, yet she reserves her favorite race for the Chicago Marathon. Ironman Coeur d’Alene came in close to being her favorite because it was so beautiful. She is currently training her run the most because of the Boston Marathon coming up in April. She is strongest in the swim and weakest on the bike. “Too bad the swim counts the least!” she says. After long training days, you’ll catch Mary taking an ice bath or grabbing a Grilled Shrimp Burrito from Rubio’s. On race day, a couple of bottles of Ensure and some laughs with friends will get her ready in the morning and her mind off the start. While Dan is an Eagle, Mary says she would be a big cat so she could catch and eat him! “Rawr!” In 2010, Mary would like to accept her risks and conquer her fears so she can enjoy riding her bike.

Fun Q&A:

What has been your favorite vacation to date?
“That’s a tough one! We’ve been so many great places. At the top of our list is NYC, Hawaii and the time we spent Christmas in Yellowstone. They take you into the park from Jackson Hole on a big snow cat and dump you off at your cabin. The entire park is blanketed in feet of snow. We spent the whole week hiking, snow-shoeing, and sitting by the fire. It was truly magical.”

If somebody gave you a million dollars what would you do with it?
“Pay off bills, move to California, invest a little for retirement and then travel. And Dan would buy Ohio State University football season tickets.”

If you could work out with one single person, who would it be?
“Jillian Michaels. (The personal trainer from the Biggest Loser. She would kick our A%$es!! Lance Armstrong, Chrissie Wellington and Michael Phelps came in a close second.”

Do you have a good quote for us?
“You should be kissed. And Often. And by someone who knows how. (From Gone With The Wind)
