PTC JUNIORS PROGRAM

Misson Statement
The Phoenix Triathlon Club Junior’s Program exists to provide a safe, friendly environment for young adults to gather for the purpose of training, learning about the sport and racing with others. Within the Junior’s Program, the Junior Elite Team strives to develop young adults into future club advocates, leaders in the triathlon community, and positive role models.

Introduction
The Phoenix Triathlon Club’s Junior’s program was developed in January of 2005 and continues to evolve and grow under the leadership of Claire Moty, the Director.  The program is intended to showcase and help young triathletes refine their skills as they develop in the sport. As Arizona’s largest Triathlon organization, the Phoenix Triathlon Club offers support from it’s members and families to help make time spent participating very rewarding. The club also offers the opportunity to receive coaching with drills in all three disciplines?

In addition to providing camaraderie at club races by showing up as a team, we offer training/workout sessions each month.  These include not only a workout, but also instructional time in the different disciplines and aspects of racing and training.  There are also training clinics in the individual disciplines. The Juniors are encouraged to volunteer to assist with the “New-To-Tri” Program, which is intended to provide a springboard into our sport for new athletes. This is an excellent opportunity to and work on leadership skills.

Minimum necessities to participate: Swim suit, running shoes, bicycle helmet, bicycle, water bottle and SUNSCREEN. Recommended accessories: Swim cap, swim goggles, lightweight breathable shorts, and sunglasses. If you have trouble getting any of these, please address this on your registration form and we may be able to assist you.

There is a $20/year fee for Juniors 16 and under and $30 for full-time students over 16, to join the Junior’s Program.  This will give full membership amenities of the Phoenix Triathlon Club.  For more information contact Claire Moty at (480) 419-5707.

From the ranks of the Phoenix Triathlon Club’s Juniors, the board of directors select up to 4 members each year to represent the Club as Junior Elite Members. This annual selection is based on those who apply and is not decided on ability but rather on the athlete’s tenure with the club (at least 1 year), level of participation, positive attitude, and leadership qualities. These Juniors serve as ambassadors not only to the club but also the sport of triathlon and represent the future of our sport.

As part of their commitment, memgers of the Junior Elite team are expected to:
-
Represent the club and it’s sponsors by wearing club uniforms displaying sponsors logos during races and training.
-
Participate in at least 3 club recommended races.
-Attend monthly club meetings when possible.
-Volunteer at club events and group workouts.
-Assist with the development of younger athletes.
-Assist their fellow Junior Triathletes where possible.
-Provide feedback regarding sponsors product .
-Provide at least one brief write-up for the website on one of the season’s races/events from their perspective.
In return, the PTC assists them with additional support from club sponsors for equipment, merchandise and clothing.

Juniors training opportunities

Claire Moty
I started swimming competitively at age 5 and became a triathlete at age 10. I have currently been a member of the Phoenix Triathlon Club for most of the 8 years!  Growing up with the club has been a wonderful experience, for I have made such long lasting friendships and learned so much.  I am grateful to have incredible people surrounding me within the Phoenix Triathlon Club. Working together and creating a bond with others is very important to me.  Connections and bonds are what drive someone like me to success.  Having people who are willing to give support around me, allows me to gain the rewards of living the life I dreamt of; racing and enjoying the triathlon style.  Likewise, I hope to inspire others by providing a positive example at all times, remaining friendly and encouraging to all of the triathletes I run into throughout the year.

I take great pride in representing the PTC through racing, competing mostly in Sprint and Olympic races. However, next summer I will be competing in my first half Ironman.

This year, I have done a considerable amount of volunteering for the triathlon community.  I decided one day to have fun and mountain bike in the trails by my house.  As I started pushing my limits, I fell and heard a crack but got up and rode for twenty more minutes until I felt I was going to pass out.  I finished the ride slowly.  Two days later, the doctors told me I had broken my elbow and needed a few months for recovery.  This spurred my increased interest in volunteering and helping others the best I could.  Everything happens for a reason, and it’s usually a good one.

Giving back to my sport has been just as rewarding as finishing and reaching a step on the podium.  The aid station at SOMA with my high school friends turned out to be one of the best things I could have done to educate non-triathletes about the great community around us.  I have heard comments from them such as, “Triathletes are such nice people,” “I can’t wait to do this again,” and “Some day I am going to do a triathlon.”  Through my recent injury, my volunteering has kept me woven into the lifestyle of triathlon.

Here are the events I have raced, along with the volunteer events I have organized or taken part in 2008:

  • 2/24 Desert Classic Duathlon-3rd age group

  • 4/13 IMAZ Volunteer
  • 5/10 SheROX Triathlon
  • 5/18 Tempe International Sprint Triathlon-1st place age group
  • 6/8 Escape from Alcatraz Triathlon
  • 7/20 Mountain Man Sprint Triathlon
  • 9/21 Nathan Sprint Triathlon Volunteer
  • 10/18 Pumpkin Man Club Championship Sprint Triathlon
  • 11/9 2.4 mile swim-1st age group
  • 11/23 IMAZ Volunteer
  • 2008 Adult swim clinic

P.J. Allen
My exposure to triathlons began in the spring of 2005 with a youth race.  I was instantly addicted to this individual sport and attempted my first sprint race later that summer.   Recognizing my passion for this new found sport, a swim coach recommended I join the PTC youth program.   I have been an active member since the summer of 2006.   PTC meetings and training events have expanded my knowledge of techniques and skills that I have been able to incorporate into my training and racing.  I currently participate in a variety of races:  sprint triathlons, duathlons, aquathons, and road races.   Next year I hope to include cyclocross and a half ironman.

The greatest benefits of being a PTC member are the fun times and friendships that come with participating in races or group training events.  Highlights from 2008 include dressing in character and working the spring and fall Ironman aid station, trail maintenance before the Desert Classic Duathlon and the PTC Junior events.   During the next year I would like to recruit more young athletes to participate in PTC club workouts and races.  I would be honored to continue wearing the PTC apparel and attend club workouts as well as meetings as a supported team member.

Trevor Gervais

My name is Trevor Gervais and I am a fifteen year old sophomore taking all honors classes at Centennial High School.  I have been a member of the Phoenix Triathlon club for over a year and have been competitively swimming since I was six years old, now a Varsity swimmer of Centennial’s region champion team.

Last year I joined Centennial’s Long-Distance track team after being disappointed with my results in the Desert Classic Duathlon, and solely to improve my running in triathlons to come.  Ever since I joined PTC I have loved every second of it.  Whether I am talking to new triathletes at meetings or volunteering a double shift at races like SOMA, there is nothing more fun then spending time around PTC members and triathletes abroad.

I enjoy the Junior program in the Phoenix Triathlon club because it allows people under the age of eighteen to participate in the exciting sport of triathlon.  The Phoenix Triathlon Club’s involved members changed me from a seasonal swimmer to a year-round triathlete by challenging me to become the best athlete I can be, and as a Junior Elite, I hope to encourage others to do the same and carry on the PTC tradition.

Below is a list of the events I have competed in relating to triathlon, and my place. All events were completed while flying the Phoenix Triathlon Club’s colors.

  • Anthem Holiday Classic Triathlon Sprint Course- Division 5/8 Overall 101/237
  • Desert Classic Duathlon Junior Course- Division 5/5 Overall 10/10
  • Deuces Wild Triathlon Olympic Course- Division 2/2 Overall 136/176
  • Nathan Triathlon Sprint Course- Division 10/13 Overall 71/274
